Devils Win in Overtime to Remain Unbeaten
(Lexington, Va.) – The Dickinson men's soccer team scored in the 94th minute, surviving an overtime thriller with Washington & Lee University to remain unbeaten on the season. Shepherd Waldenberger (Madison, Va./Madison County) scored off a saved shot to lift the Red Devils to a 1-0 victory and handing the hosts their first setback of the year.
The Red Devils could not get a break early in the first half as they rattled three potential scoring opportunities off the post. The Devils broke through, and following a brilliant save by General goalkeeper Albert Civitarese, recovered but the second shot rebounded off the left post.
A collision on the sideline led to a Red Devil yellow card and a red card on the W&L bench. The Devils built a strong attacking run, getting behind the defense only to see back to back shots find the posts once again.
The first half ended with the score still tied, 0-0. The Red Devils did create some dangerous opportunities, holding an 8-5 shot advantage at the break.
The Red Devils seemed to have the advantage in possession early in the second half, but both teams were equally as solid in the defensive third. Senior Nicolas Tierno (Sicklerville, N.J./Timber Creek Regional) stole the ball and made a great cross, but Civitarese came up big again for W&J.
The teams played scoreless through regulation. Senior goalkeeper Cody Hickok (Redding, Conn./Joel Barlow) anchored the defense with strong play while the Devils continued to create scoring chances on the other end.
The Generals were coming off an overtime win on Saturday, and that may have caught up with them as the Devils tallied the game-winner, 3:10 into the extra frame. Civitarese made a save on the first shot, but the ball deflected to the foot of Waldenberger, who put it in the back of the net.
The Red Devils improve to 4-0 overall. They return home to host Gwynedd-Mercy on Wednesday night at 7:30 pm.
