Beavers Shutout Cardinals
NEW YORK – Goalkeeper Tayfun Kucuk recorded seven saves to record the first shutout of his senior season as sophomores Mostafa Haridi and Matthew Mbamelu combined for two second-half goals to lead the City College of New York men's soccer team (3-6-2, 2-1-1 CUNYAC) to a 2-0 victory over City University of New York Athletic Conference foe York College (0-10-1, 0-5-1 CUNYAC) on Saturday morning at Randall's Island Field 90.
After a scoreless first half, Haridi connected with the back of the net off of a corner kick by Felix Dalgo in the 59th minute of the game, giving the Beavers a 1-0 lead. The goal was Haridi's first goal of the season and Dalgo's first assist on the year.
Two consecutive one-touch passes allowed Matthew Mbamelu to break through the Cardinals defenders for his fifth goal of the season to give CCNY a two-goal lead going into the final minutes of the contest. On the goal, juniors Kazuhide Kosugi and Samuel Nkama recorded their second and third assists, respectively.
Kucuk, making his first start at goalie since Sept. 24 (at Montclair State), picked up his first victory of his senior season and improved to 1-0 in CUNYAC play.
The Beavers travel to Berkeley College on Monday, Oct. 8 for nonconference action at 7 PM.
