NYU Plays Rochester to Scoreless Tie
The New York University men's soccer team tied the
University of Rochester 0-0 in University Athletic Association
(UAA) action on Saturday, October 6, at Gaelic Park in Riverdale,
NY.
The scoreless draw was worth one point to each team in the
UAA standings. At the conclusion of the day, the Violets (9-1-1,
1-0-1) remained atop the table along with #4 Carnegie Mellon
University and #8 Brandeis University (1-0 Emory University and 0-1
Washington University play on Sunday; an Eagles win would give them
sole possession of first).
Highlights
- In a tense contest in which both defenses made scoring
chances hard to come by, the Yellowjackets (6-2-2, 0-0-2) had the
best opportunity of the first half. A cross found Alex Swanger all
alone at the 6 with an open net in front of him, but his shot hit
the side netting.
- NYU had its best chance of the second period in the 56th
minute, when Paolo Luciano played Kyle Green to the right edge of
the box. Green sent a cross in to Ryan Horch, who headed it just
wide of the left post.
- Jonas Poster made a huge save for the Violets in the 70th
minute. Swanger lined up for a free kick just a few yards outside
the 18 and blasted a shot to the upper left corner. Poster dove to
his right and turned the ball away, stopping a dangerous
chance.
- Both sides had good opportunities in the extra sessions,
with the Violets' best coming 1:18 into the second overtime. Shawn
McNitt-Gray played a short touch to Mickey Ingerman in the middle
of the field, who ripped a shot just wide.
- Rochester had a corner in the final seconds, but NYU
cleared it away to end a 0-0 game. Poster finished with two saves
to record the shutout, while Scott Garfing made one for Rochester.
The shots were nearly even at 11-10 in favor of the
Violets.
"We're happy enough to take the tie," said Head Coach Joe
Behan. "We still have a lot of work to do, but we're undefeated in
the UAA. Rochester is a good side – Poster was the man of the
match and kept us in the game."
NYU is back in action next weekend when it travels to
Washington University and the University of Chicago for a
Friday-Sunday UAA road trip. The game against the Bears begins at
8:00 pm central time in St. Louis, MO.
