Five Score as Hopkins Blanks Ursinus, 5-0
BALTIMORE, MD – The Johns Hopkins men's soccer team erupted for five goals on Saturday afternoon as the Blue Jays shut out the visiting Ursinus Bears in Centennial Conference action at Homewood Field. The Blue Jays improve to 5-4-2 overall and 3-1-1 in the conference, while the Bears fall to 4-8-0 overall and 1-4-0 in the league.
Senior Brandon Sumpio got things going early for the Blue Jays, scoring his first goal of the season in the 18th minute. Freshman Josh Hong beat his Bears' defender and from the right end line, sent the ball across the face of the goal, where Sumpio one-timed it home at the far post. Seventeen minutes later, Hopkins turned a one-goal lead into a three-goal advantage, scoring twice in a 30-second span. Freshman Eric Buck took a pass on the left side from classmate Ian Heinrich and slipped a shot under Kieran Keyser in the 34th minute to push the Blue Jays lead to two. Just 30 seconds later, freshman Nigel Joseph crossed the ball from the left end line and junior Birin Padam blasted it into the goal for his first of the season.
Freshman Kenny DeStefano pushed the Blue Jays' lead to four in the 77th minute. He beat an Ursinus defender inside the six-yard box and chipped the ball past Keyser. Less than six minutes later, sophomore Andrew Clayton put a cap on the scoring. Junior Chris Douglas crossed the ball into the box from the left and Clayton was there to put it home in the 84th minute.
Sophomore Nick Cerrone made three saves in just over 85 minutes of action to earn the win, before being replaced by freshman Madison Wilcox. Keyser finished with seven saves in the loss for the Bears. Hopkins outshot Ursinus 23-8 and had a 3-2 edge in corners.
Hopkins returns to action on Wednesday, October 10 as the Blue Jays travel to Aston, PA to take on the Neumann Knights. Game time is set for 7:00 pm for the non-conference match-up.
