Whitewater Scores Season High Six in Win at Finlandia
UW-Whitewater ended a string of four games without a win with a 6-2 win at Finlandia University in Hancock, Michigan Sunday. Six goals is the most UW-W has scored this season, and the most dating back to October 12, 2011 when the Warhawks won 8-0 at Finlandia.
Whitewater had the first four shots on goal in the game, among them Michael Salm's first goal of the season, assisted by Max Hey, at 8:32. Finlandia's Micah Laban tied it at 19:20. Kyle Ricely earned his first goal at 24:01 to give UW-W the lead back, 2-1, but less than a minute later FU's Adam Arthur knotted the score at 2-2, and that's where is stood at intermission.
The second half was all Whitewater, and it came in a wave. Jonathon Fischer gave UW-W the lead for good with his second goal of the season at 77:00. John Gottwald made it 4-2 with his first goal of the year at the 78:19 mark, and Fischer's second goal of the game at 79:16 upped Whitewater's lead to 5-2. Ty McCoy's second score of 2012 ended the scoring at 80:28. The surge gave UW-W four goals in 3:28. Finlandia had one shot on goal in the second half, and Warhawk goalie Andrew Bitta made the save with 4:41 left in the game.
UW-W out-shot the Lions 23-3 and led in corner kicks 15-3.
Whitewater is 5-4-2 overall and 1-1-1 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Finlandia is 2-7 overall and 0-2 in the WIAC. The Lions are WIAC members in men's soccer only.
The Warhawks will host Illinois Wesleyan University Wednesday at 7:30 at Fiskum Field. The game is the second half of a doubleheader, with the UW-W women facing IWU at 5:00. Fiskum Field is west of Perkins Stadium and northwest of Williams Center/Kachel Fieldhouse on the north end of campus. Free parking is adjacent to the field.
