Mbamelu’s Goal the Game Winner as Beavers Record Third Consecutive Victory
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – A late charge by the College of Staten Island Dolphins (8-8, 3-3 CUNYAC) tied the game at 2-2 but sophomore Matthew Mbamelu recorded his seventh goal of the season in the second overtime to give the City College of New York (5-6-2, 3-1-1 CUNYAC) its third consecutive victory on Wednesday afternoon at the College of Staten Island Soccer Complex.
Mbamelu's goal came off a cross by junior Samuel Nkama in the 105th minute of the City University of New York Athletic Conference contest as the Beavers are now 1-0-2 in two overtime games.
Nkama recorded his own goal, the third for the forward, off of a pass from Chon Ngai as City College struck first to take a 1-0 lead. The Beavers took a 2-0 lead after the Dolphins deflected a corner kick into their own net as CCNY dominated the first period and went into halftime with a 2-0 lead.
However, CSI's Nedgy Nazon scored two unanswered goals to tie the game at 2-2, forcing the third overtime of the season for CCNY.
After a scoreless first overtime, a scramble in the box led to Nkama sending a short pass to Mbamelu as the sophomore found the back of the net to clinch CCNY's third CUNYAC victory.
Senior Tayfun Kucuk improved to .500 (3-3) as the goalkeeper recorded his third consecutive victory on the year.
City College continues CUNYAC play as the Beavers face Hunter College on Saturday, Oct. 13 at 5 PM at Randall's Island Field 10.
