No. 15 Men’s Soccer Prevails 1-0 Over USMMA
HOBOKEN, N.J. (October 10, 2012)
The Mariners played a defensive brand of soccer from the get-go, and did not even attempt a shot until they were on a counterattack with nine minutes left in the first half. King's Point managed just one more shot the entire game, and that came with only 34 seconds remaining in the match. Stevens goalkeeper Paul Killian (Ellicott City, Md.) gobbled up both shots to earn his fifth shutout of the season.
The Ducks scored their goal with a play that began with a pass by junior Curtis Stecyk (Boulder, Colo.). The ball found Daza deep behind the USMMA defensive line, even behind the Mariner's goalkeeper. Daza was close to the endline and far from the goalmouth, but let fly with a shot curled around the near post and into the side netting for his ninth goal of the season.
Stecyk had a near-miss of his own earlier in the game. Just four minutes in, the junior fired a laser from far outside the box that rang loudly off the left post. Other than Daza's goal it was certainly the closest the Ducks came to scoring a second time on Wednesday.
The Mariner's best scoring chance may have been with seven minutes remaining, when a high, arcing ball was bound for the Stevens box. Killian lept up and was able to corral it despite a good deal of contact in traffic.
The Ducks dominated the scoresheet, outshooting the USMMA 18-2. Stevens held the advantage in corner kicks 8-2 as well.
The Ducks will be back in action on Saturday against Elmira College at 1 p.m. The game will feature both senior day and homecoming celebrations.
