No. 19 UW-Platteville Loses to Wartburg, 3-2
The University of Wisconsin-Platteville men's soccer team had
its six-match winning streak snapped on Wednesday when they dropped
a 3-2 decision to host Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa.
The Knights (6-5-2) scored twice within the first 15 minutes of
the second half to come away with the victory. Zubeen Azari scored
his first of two goals in the first half in the 33rd minute to tie
the game at 1. Then, in the 50th minute, he scored an unassisted
goal that put the home team ahead 2-1. Later in the half, Neil
Shields added a goal in the 65th minute for the 3-1 lead. The three
goals by Wartburg are the most surrendered by the Pioneer defense
all season.
The Pioneers (11-2-1) went ahead early in the contest in the 23rd
minute when freshman William Pretto converted on a corner kick from
senior Brandon Chmiel. UW-Platteville and Wartburg each had six
shots on goal in the contest.
However, the two goals early in the second half proved to be the
difference. Chmiel added his ninth goal of the season in the 88th
minute after taking a pass from Brad Streich to cut the deficit to
one, 3-2.
The Pioneers will look to return to their winning ways with a home
match, next Wednesday, at 7 p.m. as part of a soccer doubleheader
vs. Luther College at Pioneer Stadium.
