Chris Haeberle’s Goal in the 80th Minute Sends Washington U. Past No. 20 New York, 1-0
St. Louis, Mo., October 12, 2012 – Sophomore Chris Haeberle's goal in the 80th minute propelled the Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over No. 20 ranked New York University in University Athletic Association (UAA) play on Friday night at Francis Field in St. Louis, Mo.
With the win, Washington U. (7-3-1) moved into a tie for first place with Emory University in the conference standings with a 2-1 mark. New York dropped to 9-2-1, 1-1-1 in the UAA, and sits two points behind WUSTL in a tie for fourth place.
After a scoreless first half, the Bears nearly took the lead in the 57th minute. Junior Jeremy Kirkwood was left open in the box, but did not get much on the left-footed shot that was saved by NYU goalkeeper Jonas Poster.
In the 75th minute, New York's Ryan Horch nearly broke the 0-0 tie as he lofted a cross from 40 yards out that junior goalkeeper Jonathan Jebson deflected off the crossbar. Three minutes later, Washington U. junior Nik Patel fired a left-footed shot from 30-yards out that just went wide left.
Kirkwood set up the game-winner just a minute later has he took the ball out of the middle of the field and found Haeberle in the box for the game-winner. The goal for Haeberle was his team-leading third of the year.
Jebson made two saves in the nets as he improved to 7-3-1. He has allowed just one goal in 270 minutes in three conference games. Jebson has a 0.47 goals against average in 11 starts with six shutouts.
Washington University continues its four-match homestand with another UAA match at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 19, against No. 9 ranked Brandeis University. The Judges had their 17-match unbeaten streak snapped with a 1-0 loss at the University of Chicago on Friday.
Bear Notebook: Washington University leads the all-time series with New York, 21-4-1, and remained undefeated against NYU in St. Louis.
