McGarrity Breaks Goal Record as Carleton Routs Northwestern

More news about: Carleton men's team

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Freshmen Branden McGarrity scored twice, breaking the Carleton College record for goals in a single season, as the men's soccer team posted an 8-0 triumph over Northwestern College in a non-conference contest. The Knights extended their unbeaten streak to 10 matches, outscoring the opposition 34-6 over this stretch.

When McGarrity scored a hat trick in his first collegiate game back on Sept. 1 and added two more goals in his next game, it quickly became an issue of when—not if—the rookie was going to break the team record. Last week McGarrity tied Ron Sanders' team record of 15 goals in a season established back in 1963. He broke the standard with a goal in the 54th minute and added another less than two minutes later, his fifth multi-goal match of the season and raising his MIAC-best total to 17 for the season. That figure is tied for 10th in conference history and the most goals scored by a MAIC player since Macalester's Kimani Williams tallied 22 back in 2001. (SEE CHARTS BELOW).

McGarrity was hardly alone in finding the back of the net as today's goal total was the highest by the Knights since posting a 10-0 victory over Finlandia University on Oct. 15, 2006. This afternoon's scoring outburst also broke the team goal-scoring mark for a season. This year's squad has tallied 53 scores, eclipsing the previous mark of 48 established in 2006.

Today's win was Carleton's 13th of the season (13-1-1 overall), matching the fourth-highest figure in program history, surpassing last year's total and trailing only the school-record 17 wins in 2008, 15 in 2009, and 14 in 2007.

Simon Ginet scored twice in the early going, setting the tone for the contest and continuing his hot streak. The junior notched his first goal on the game's initial shot in the sixth minute. McGarrity had the ball along the end line and sent it in front where Ginet calmly slotted it home in the sixth minute. Four minutes later, Ginet headed home a cross from Derek Funk to post his 10th goal of the season.

In the 30th minute, Neil Bartholomay headed home a Will Corcoran corner kick, giving the visitors a commanding 3-0 advantage on the scoreboard. This was Bartholomay's fourth goal of the season, tying him for most scores by a MIAC defender this season.

As the teams emerged from halftime, Carleton continued its assault on the Northwestern goal.

At the 49:46 mark, Funk notched an unassisted goal, his third score of the campaign. Only nine seconds later, Alex Voorhees' long-range shot made it 5-0 in favor of Carleton.

In the 54th minute, McGarrity broke the scoring record with his shot from on the doorstep, finishing a feed from Trent Elmore. The first-year phenom contributed another goal in the 56th minute. Barely 10 minutes had elapsed since intermission, and Carleton had scored four times.

Will Schifeling rounded out the scoring with his second goal of the season, this one a tally in the 77th minute.

With Carleton possessing a 19-to-3 edge in shots, Knight goalkeeper James Neher needed to make only one save over the first 63 minutes before giving way to Nate Livingston.
