Washington U. Stuns No. 15 Rochester on Goal by Michael Flowers

Rochester, N.Y., October 26, 2012 — The Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer team remained in the hunt for the University Athletic Association (UAA) championship with a 1-0 upset win at No. 15 ranked University of Rochester on Friday night in Rochester, N.Y.

Washington U., which picked up its first win over Rochester since 2002, sits one point back of first place Brandeis University and Carnegie Mellon University in the conference standings with two games remaining. Brandeis and Carnegie Mellon will meet on Sunday in Waltham, Mass.

Junior Michael Flowers scored the lone goal of the game in the 40th minute on a 20-yard strike from the left wing. Junior Jeremy Kirkwood assisted on the goal for Flowers, his third of the season.

Junior goalkeeper Jonathan Jebson made three saves in goal and picked up the Bears' ninth shutout of the season. Washington U. has recorded a shutout in eight of nine wins this season.

Rochester outshot Washington U. 11-10 for the game, while the Bears had the 4-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Washington University (9-4-1, 3-2 UAA) plays its final road game of the season on Sunday, Oct. 28, at Case Western Reserve University. Game time is set for 1:30 p.m. (ET) in Cleveland, Ohio. Case suffered a 1-0- loss to the University on Chicago on Friday to drop its overall record to 3-12-1, 0-5 in the UAA.
