Seahawk Men's Soccer Drops Heartbreaker in CAC First Round

More news about: St. Mary-s (Md.) men's team

York, Pa. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's soccer team went down fighting Saturday afternoon as the sixth-seeded Seahawks battled third-seeded York College of Pennsylvania in the first round of the 2012 Capital Athletic Conference Men's Soccer Championship Tournament.  York, the three-time defending CAC champion, eked out a 1-0 victory in the final minutes of the contest.

York (12-5-2) controlled the tempo of the match, posting a 26-2 shot advantage and a 13-1 margin in corner kicks but struggled to slip one past junior goalkeeper Austin Brown (Lutherville, Md./St. Paul's School) and the Seahawk defense until the 86th minute.

The Spartans were awarded a free kick on the edge of 18-yard penalty box and first-year defender Matty Martinez (Cheltenham, Pa.) struck the free kick, rifling a low shot into the right corner at 85:37.

St. Mary's tried to counter in the final minutes of the match, getting the ball over the midfield line but fell short in materializing any shots.  Midfielders Ryan Plaisance (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg) and Davis Holland (Cape Carteret, N.C./Leonardtown [Md.]) each fired a shot for the Seahawks in the first half while Brown finished the contest with eight saves.

The loss brings St. Mary's 2012 campaign to a close as the Seahawks finish with a 4-13 overall record.
