Olivet men’s soccer team falls to Trine, 2-1, in regular season finale

OLIVET, Mich. – The Olivet College men's soccer team fell to Trine (Ind.) University, 2-1, today in its regular season finale and on Senior Day at the Cutler Athletic Complex in Olivet.

The teams battled to a 0-0 tie after the first 45 minutes of play. The Comets grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 61st minute when sophomore Zach Schulz (Farmington) scored a goal from five yards out. Sophomore Esteban Russell (DeWitt) earned the assist after slipping the ball into the box, where Schulz finished with a shot to the far post. The Thunder tied the game at 1-1 in the 78th minute and scored what proved to be the game winning goal with 5:26 left in the game.

Both Olivet and Trine recorded 19 shots, with the Thunder having one more shot on-goal, 13-12. Freshman Cory Werner-Hoskins (Kalamazoo/Mattawan) topped the Comets with six shots, while Russell had four shots. Sophomore Alex Lang (West Bloomfield/Detroit Catholic Central) was the losing keeper, as he made nine saves.

Despite today's loss, Olivet will be the No. 2 seed in the 2012 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Tournament. The Comets will host No. 3 seed Hope College in the semifinals Thursday afternoon at 3 p.m.
