Washington University Men’s Soccer Shuts Out Principia, 3-0
St. Louis, Mo., October 18, 2012 - The Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer team improved its record to 8-4-1 with a 3-0 non-conference win over Principia College on Thursday night at Francis Field.
Washington U. struck early with a goal by junior Jeremy Kirkwood in the second minute. Sophomore Chris Haeberle played a ball from the left side in to Kirkwood in the box, who kicked it past the Principia goalkeeper coming off his line to give the Bears a 1-0 lead just 90 seconds into the match. The Bears kept up the offensive pressure throughout the remainder of the half, outshooting the Panthers 8-0 in the opening frame. Washington U. placed three more shots on goal in the half, but was unable to add to its lead as those three shots were saved by Principia goalkeeper Matt Jones.
In the second half, freshman Ike Witte took a pass from Kirkwood near the top of the box and fired it to the lower left corner of the goal to give the Bears a 2-0 lead in the 52nd minute. Four minutes later, Haeberle scored his team-leading fourth goal of the season to put Washington U. ahead 3-0. Freshman David Alemany crossed a ball into the box from the left corner of the field, and Haeberle headed it into the net for the goal.
Washington U. finished with a 20-2 advantage in shots in the contest. The Bears placed nine shots on goal. Principia had just one shot on frame in the match, which was saved by junior Michael McCarthy late in the second half. McCarthy and junior Jonathan Jebson combined for the team shutout. Jebson picked up the win for the Bears with slightly more than 66 minutes in goal, while McCarthy played the final 22:38.
Washington University (8-4-1, 2-2 UAA) returns to University Athletic Association (UAA) action with a pair of road contests next weekend. The Bears are scheduled to face No. 16 University of Rochester at 7:30 p.m. (ET) on Friday, Oct. 26, in Rochester, N.Y., before traveling to Cleveland, Ohio, to take on Case Western Reserve University at 1:30 p.m. (ET) on Sunday, Oct. 28.
Bear Notebook: Washington U. improved to 36-6-1 in the all-time series against Principia … Eight of the Bears' past nine wins over Principia have been shutouts … The win was number 185 for head coach Joe Clarke(185-83-33, .669) in his 16 seasons at the helm of the Washington U. program.
