Redlands Men's Soccer Earns Six All-SCIAC Selections
It was announced on Tuesday by the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) that the University of Redlands men's soccer program garnered six All-SCIAC selections, as voted upon by the nine head coaches. Senior midfielder Gabe Ramirez (Pasadena, CA), junior defenderRichie Marquez (Pomona, CA), junior goalkeeper Andreas Silva (San Jose, CA) and sophomore forward Charles Izydorek (Redlands, CA) all landed on the First Team, while junior defender Evan Keny-Guyer(Portland, OR) and sophomore midfielder Matej Kustura (Las Vegas, NV) each landed on the Second Team.
Capping off a remarkable career with the Maroon and Gray, Ramirez cemented himself in the U of R record books by collecting his third consecutive First-Team All-SCIAC distinction. Ranking second in the conference in assists per game (0.384), he tallied five total assists during 16 conference games. While donning a Bulldog uniform, he has amassed 26 assists in all, ranking him third all-time in Redlands men's soccer history. In addition to his playmaking abilities, he showed his scoring prowess by providing four goals to the dangerous Redlands attack during the 2012 campaign.
Also notching his third straight First-Team All-SCIAC award, Marquez played stellar defense all season long and helped the team to lead the conference in goals-against-average (0.78) and total goals allowed (13) during conference competition. Always a threat in the air, he consistently won his elevated duals and eagerly contributed to the attack when called upon, leading all Bulldog defenders in goals (2) and points (5).
Once again a brick wall in the Bulldog goal, Silva performed valiantly throughout the conference season, garnering his third First-Team honor in as many years. Ranking first in the SCIAC in goals-against-average (0.75) and shutouts (7), he started all 16 conference contests for Redlands while accumulating a save-percentage of 0.848.
Following his Newcomer of the Year and First-Team All-SCIAC honors in 2011, Izydorek performed admirably in 2012 while earning First-Team recognition once again. The top goal-scorer for the Maroon and Gray, he found the back of the net eight times during the conference campaign, highlighted by three game-winners. In addition, he dished out three assists to give him 19 points during SCIAC action, also ranking first on the team. The eight scores placed him in a tie-for-third in the conference for total goals by an individual.
Starting in every conference game for the Bulldogs, Keny-Guyer collects his inaugural All-SCIAC award, landing on the Second Team. After scoring the Maroon and Gray's first goal of the year against Occidental College on September 10 in a 4-1 victory, he served as a lock-down defensive stopper all season long. Moreover, Keny-Guyer was integral in helping the Redlands defense to lead the conference in goals-against-average (0.78) and total goals allowed (13) in SCIAC play.
Kustura enjoyed a breakout year in a starting role for Redlands in 2012, leading the squad in assists during SCIAC competition (6) and ranking second in goals scored with four. His assist total ranked him second in the conference while his assists per game (0.375) landed him third. On October 13, Kustura led Redlands to its first victory over Chapman University since 2007, netting the game-winner in the 27th minute.
With six All-SCIAC honorees, Redlands collected the most awards of any school in the conference. In addition, the Bulldogs raked in the highest number of First-Team honors among the nine programs.
