On a Ryan Garvey goal in overtime, the Centre men's soccer team picked up its first NCAA Tournament win since 1998 and eliminated defending national champion Ohio Wesleyan by a 2-1 score on Friday in a first round game in Wheaton, Ill.

After the teams finished regulation and the first overtime period tied at one, Garvey  scored the game-winner three minutes into the final overtime off an assist from Austin Greer. Garvey also scored the Colonels' goal in regulation, continuing a hot streak in which he has scored in eight of the last nine games with 13 goals over that stretch.

It took some time for the Colonels to get on the board after being outshot 9-2 in the first half and falling behind when they conceded a goal by Ohio Wesleyan's Kit North with 2:37 remaining before halftime. With just under 20 minutes left in regulation though, Garvey was able to tie the score on an assist by Cameron Miller.

Garvey continued to rewrite Centre's record books in Friday's game, tying the career record for goals with his goal in regulation and breaking it with the game-winner. He also increased his single-season records in goals and points to 21 and 46 respectively.

Overall, Ohio Wesleyan took 17 shots to Centre's 12 and held a 9-3 edge in corners. Zach Sosnovich made five saves for the Colonels while Paul Hendrix had four stops for Ohio Wesleyan.

It was the second all-time NCAA Tournament win for the Colonels, who defeated Washington University-St. Louis in 1998 and last made a tournament appearance in 1999. With the win, Centre moves to 15-3-3 on the year and advances to a second round matchup Saturday with the winner of Transylvania and host school Wheaton. Ohio Wesleyan finishes its season at 13-3-5.
