Washington U. Falls to North Park 4-1 in NCAA First Round
Dubuque, Iowa, November 10, 2012 —The Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer team saw its season come to an end with a 4-1 loss to North Park University in the first round of the 2012 NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championship Saturday at Loras College.
North Park scored in the 32nd minute on a long pass forward to give the Vikings a 1-0 lead. North Park maintained its aggressiveness through the remainder of the half, and made it 2-0 with two seconds left in the period with a goal on a long free kick. The Bears' best scoring opportunity of the half came in the 43rd minute when junior Jeremy Kirkwood was fouled just outside the box, but the free kick was blocked as North Park kept the Bears scoreless in the first half.
In the second half, the Vikings extended their lead to 3-0 when a shot in the box was deflected off a Washington U. defender to the opposite corner of the net. The Bears got on the scoreboard when freshmanDavid Alemany scored his second goal of the season in the 68th minute to cut the deficit to 3-1. In the 85th minute, senior Zac Query headed a ball off a corner kick that was blocked to near the top of the box, where sophomore Chris Haeberle made an outstanding bicycle kick that was saved by a leaping North Park goalkeeper. The Vikings immediately countered and scored their fourth goal of the match on a breakaway shot to the upper right corner of the net less than 30 seconds later.
North Park outshot the Bears 21-10 in the match, including a 12-2 advantage in shots on goal. Junior goalkeeper Jonathan Jebsonrecorded six saves in just more than 85 minutes, while senior goalkeeperDavid Wilson played the final 4:38 of the match and recorded one save.
Washington University ended its season with a 10-5-2 overall record. North Park improved to 13-2-5, and advanced to the Second Round.
Bear Notebook: Washington University dropped to 28-20-2 all-time in the NCAA Tournament … It was the first match between the two teams since 1998, and the series is now tied, 1-1 … The Washington U. senior class helped the Bears to a 48-17-11 record in their four-year careers.
