Bulldog Men’s Soccer Garners Four NSCAA All-West Region Recipients
The National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) recently announced that four members of the University of Redlands men's soccer program received All-West Region accolades. Junior defender Richie Marquez (Pomona, CA) headlined the group, collecting First-Team honors. Additionally, junior goalkeeper Andreas Silva (San Jose, CA) and sophomore forward Charles Izydorek (Redlands, CA) garnered Second-Team accolades, while senior midfielder Gabe Ramirez (Pasadena, CA) landed on the Third Team.
As one of two Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) players to be represented on the 2012 First Team, Marquez collects NSCAA All-Region honors for the third time in his career. The leader of the Bulldog defense helped the squad to accumulate an impressive 0.82 goals-against-average on top of tallying eight shutouts during the campaign. Additionally, he scored a goal on September 19 in a tie against Chapman University and later notched the game-winner against Caltech on October 6.
A three-time NSCAA All-Region honoree, Silva garners his highest award with his inaugural Second-Team nod. In addition to contributing eight shutouts on the campaign, Silva recorded a stellar goals-against-average of 0.79 while making 89 saves in more than 1900 minutes of action. Moreover, he accumulated a solid save-percentage of 0.840 as the Bulldogs' starter between the pipes.
Receiving his first-ever All-Region accolade, Izydorek paced the Redlands offense by leading the team in goals (9) and points (21). On September 14 against then-top-ranked Trinity University, he gave the Bulldogs the lead in the second half when he scored a fantastic goal on the counter attack. Furthermore, he tallied three game-winners, including one against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges in overtime on October 17. He also notched three assists on the campaign.
Ramirez capped off an extraordinary career with the Bulldogs with his inaugural NSCAA All-Region award for his solid efforts during the 2012 campaign. By tallying five assists during the season, he moved into third on the all-time Redlands men's soccer list with a total of 26. On top of distributing the ball, Ramirez found the back of the net four times, ranking tied for second on the team in this category.
With four selections, Redlands gained the most of any SCIAC program, with the remaining schools combining for a total of seven recipients.
