St. Joseph's-L.I. Captures 2012 Skyline Men's Soccer Championship
Patchogue, N.Y. - The top seeded St.
Joseph's Golden Eagles (13-9) defeated #3 Mount Saint Mary College
(11-8-1) in the Skyline Conference Championship final, 3-0, on
Sunday afternoon at Danzi Stadium. The victory earns the
Golden Eagles their third trip to the NCAA Division III
Championship beginning this Thursday. Tournament
brackets will be released this Monday at 1 p.m.
Senior striker John Dettori was named the Skyline
Tournament's Most Outstanding Player as he scored two goals,
including the game winner at 6:46, and assisted on the second goal
by senior midfielder Craig Ceruti at 23:18. In the Eagles 4-2
victory against NYU-Polytechnic on Friday, Dettori was credited
with SJC's first two tallies. On the season, he has a team
leading 21 goals and 50 points.
Senior goalkeeper Chris Muhs picked up his ninth shutout of
the season as he saved three Mount Saint Mary shots on goal.
SJC outshot the Blue Knights, 15-5, in the contest.
Co-captain and senior defender Dylan Evans assisted on
Dettroi's final goal to make it 3-0 in the 89th minute. The
home team had taken a a 2-0 lead into halftime.
First-year head coach Tim Trava guided his team to the
Skyline Championship in his maiden voyage at the helm of the
club. The Golden Eagles last reached the NCAA's in 2008 and
2009 under the direction of Gary Smith.
MSMC advanced to the finals of the Skyline Championship for
the first time in program history.
