THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (August 13, 2013) – On Tuesday, Maritime men's soccer first-year head coach Martin Clayes announced the schedule for the upcoming 2013 season. The Privateers will kick off the new campaign three weeks from today on Tuesday, Sept. 3, with a home game against non-conference opponent Berkeley College (N.Y.) at 7 p.m.
"I am looking forward to my first season as a Privateer!" said Clayes. "I believe we have a great group of upperclassmen who know what it takes to win games at this level. I am excited to see how the newcomers adapt and I am confident that we will have a squad capable of improving on last season's performance both in conference and non-conference action."
The 2013 schedule consists of 20 regular season games with an even split of 10 home games and 10 contests away from campus. All home games will be played at Reinhart Field right here on the SUNY Maritime College campus. The Privateers will take on 11 non-conference opponents throughout the year, mostly towards the front-end of the schedule, which will help prepare the squad for nine contests against Skyline Conference opponents.
This year, the men's squad will play three doubleheaders with Maritime's women's team all in the span of six days, including two at home. The Privateers will host King's College (N.Y.) on Friday, Sept. 13, with the women kicking off first at 5 p.m. before the men play at 7 p.m. The very next day, the teams will travel to La Plume, Pa. to take on Keystone College at 2 p.m. (women) and 4 p.m. (men). The last doubleheader will be back at Reinhart Field on Wednesday, Sept. 18, when the men will host Lehman at 5 p.m. before the women take on Briarcliffe at 7 p.m.
The rest of the non-conference schedule includes home games against City College (Sept. 7), arch-rival Kings Point (Sept. 11) and Brooklyn College (Oct. 16), combined with road games at the College of Staten Island (Sept. 6), Vassar (Sept. 22), New Jersey City (Oct. 22) and Coast Guard (Oct. 27).
The Skyline Conference portion of the schedule opens on Saturday, Sept. 21, when the Privateers will travel to Old Westbury for a noon kickoff. Maritime will host the following Skyline foes in 2013: St. Joseph's (Sept. 27), Sage (Oct. 12), Mount St. Vincent (Oct. 24) and Yeshiva (Oct. 29), which will be the Privateers' annual Senior Day game. In addition to the Old Westbury game, Maritime will play at conference opponents Mount St. Mary (Oct. 5), Farmingdale St. (Oct. 9), Purchase (Oct. 19) and NYU-Poly (Oct. 26).
The Privateers will be vying for their seventh-straight berth in the Skyline Conference Tournament in 2013, which will begin on Saturday, Nov. 2 with the opening round. The semifinals will be held on Nov. 6 and the championship game is slated for Nov. 9. All conference tournament games will be played on the campus of the higher seeded team.
Maritime will look to improve on its 2012 record of 8-12-1, in which the squad earned the #6 seed in the Skyline Tournament after a conference record of 4-5-0, but lost to #4 seed Mount St. Mary, 1-0, in the opening round. The Privateers hope to capture the conference championship once again and to return back to the NCAA DIII National Tournament for the first time since back-to-back appearances in 2010 and 2011, the firsts in program history.
