Thomas More Defeats Wittenberg, 6-1, in Home Opener

(CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky.) - The Thomas More College men's soccer team defeated Wittenberg University, 6-1, today (Wednesday, September 4, 2013) in its home-opener at The Bank of Kentucky Field in Crestview Hills, Kentucky.

With the win, the Saints improve to 1-1 and with the loss, the Tigers fall to 1-2.

Thomas More took an early 1-0 lead when freshman defender RJ Best (Lorton, Va./South County Secondary) scored off an assist from senior midfielder Jacob Waldrop (Louisville, Ky./St. Xavier) at the 15:28 mark. Wittenberg tied the game at 1-1 at the 24:33 mark when Kevin Bound found the back of the net. Freshman forward Brian Runyon (Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg) put the Saints up 2-1 at 29:49 when he scored off a cross from junior forward Kyle Troutman (Fairfield, Ohio/Fairfield). Runyon extended the Saints' lead to 3-1 at halftime when he scored off an assist from sophomore Austin Juniet (Fort Thomas, Ky./Newport Central Catholic) at the 30:06 mark.

In the second half, Thomas More increased the lead to 4-1 at the 47:19 mark when freshman midfielder Wheeler Blersch (Anderson Township, Ohio/Covington Catholic) scored off a cross from Troutman. Juniet found the back of the net at the 49:51 mark off an assist from junior defender Alex Dean (Fort Thomas, Ky./Highlands) to extend the lead to 5-1. Thomas More closed out the scoring at the 51:55 when Juniet scored off an assist from Best to make the score 6-1.

Junior goalkeeper Matt Kees (Covington, Ky./Scott) played the first 70:37 in goal and allowed one goal, while recording three saves. Senior goalkeeper Kevin Poe (Bethel, Ohio/Bethel-Tate) played the final 19:23 and didn't face a shot.

Thomas More out-shot Wittenberg, 14-5, including 9-4 on-goal. Thomas More also won the battle of corner kicks, 5-2.

Thomas More is idle until next Wednesday (September 11) when it hosts Earlham College at 5 p.m. at The Bank of Kentucky Field.
