More news about: Johns Hopkins men's team

BALTIMORE, MD – Johns Hopkins got goals from four different players and four saves from junior Nick Cerrone as the Blue Jays shutout visiting Rosemont, 4-0, to win the Blue Jay Invitational. The Blue Jays improve to 2-1-0 on the season while the Ravens slip to 1-3-0. Cerrone was named the tournament's Defensive MVP after posting back-to-back shutouts. Goucher's Kevin Tonkovich was named the Offensive MVP.

Freshman Victor Osio finally got the Blue Jays on the board in the 74th minute and his first career goal was worth the wait. In a great build up to a great finish, junior Mark Spencer got things going with a short throw in to classmate Rob Heuler, who beat two defenders before passing to senior Danny Reategui. He collected the pass, spun and then gave the ball right back to Heuler, who dribbled to the endline before centering the ball. With his back to the goal, Osio back-heeled the ball inside the left post. The goal opened things up for Hopkins, as the Jays would score three more in the final 14 minutes to take the win.

Reategui pushed the lead to two in the 77th minute with a penalty kick goal after getting taken down in the box by a Ravens' defender. Just over two minutes later, sophomore Eric Buck set up free kick from the right side, about 26 yards out. He stepped up and put a perfectly placed shot in the right upper corner to stake the Blue Jays to a three-goal lead. Sophomore Josh Hong closed out the scoring in the 90th minute thanks to an unselfish play by junior Matt Carey. Senior Taylor Woodrum played a long ball over the defense to Carey along the left touchline. Carey dribbled into the box, beat a Rosemont defender and fed the ball to a wide-open Hong on the right side of the box. Hong one-timed the pass home for his first of the season.

Cerrone made four saves to earn his second straight shutout while his counterpart, Austin Molocznik finished with five stops. Hopkins outshot Rosemont, 24-9, and had a 6-1 advantage in corners.

Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, September 14 as the Blue Jays host the Scranton Royals. The non-conference tilt is slated for a 4:30 pm start at Homewood Field.
