Stout Defense, Lord Lead Mariners to Victory at UMPI
PRESQUE ISLE, Maine – Maine Maritime prevented Maine-Presque Isle from getting a shot on goal in a 2-0 victory over the Owls' at Family Park Field on Saturday. Jesse Perkins (Bangor, Maine / Bangor) gets credit for his third shutout of the season, with a nod to his defense which allowed eight off-target shots in the contest.
David Lord (Kenduskeag, Maine / Central) gave the Mariners (2-2-1) all of the offense they needed. David Clough (Mt. Vernon, Maine / Maranacook) headed a corner in the direction of the Owls' net, but was denied by UMPI keeper, Caleb Bragg-Grady. Bragg-Grady couldn't keep his mitts on the ball, and Lord was there to clean up the carom for the 1-0 lead late in the 26th minute.
The Mariners took six corners in the contest, while holding the Owls to a pair. Bragg-Grady stopped eight of the 10 Mariners' shots on goal, but MMA solved him again in the second half. Nick George (Bangor, Maine / Bangor) finished a sequence of passes in the 61st minute. Camped on UMPI's doorstep, he finished a Kyle Haslam (Lamoine, Maine / Ellsworth) pass from the right side of the box to make it 2-0.
The Mariners return to action tomorrow at Maine-Fort Kent.
