Alvarez nets golden goal, Morrisville State men claim 2OT win over Oswego

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – Morrisville State College junior forward Gilroy Alvarez (Guatemala) had plenty of chances throughout the game to put one away for the Mustangs, but not one shot was more important than the one found the back of the net with 43 seconds remaining in the second overtime period to give the hosts the 2-1 sudden victory over visiting SUNY Oswego Monday afternoon in Morrisville.

The win lifts Morrisville State to 5-2-1 overall, while Oswego drops to 0-5-1.

Oswego took advantage of miscommunication by the Mustang defense early on and forced Morrisville State keeper, Rob Larkin (Clinton, N.Y.), to challenge a long ball, which was chipped over his head by Patrick Sprague (Spencerport, N.Y.) just eight minutes into the contest for the early Laker lead.

Morrisville State had several chances to net the tying score, but were turned away by Oswego's Chris Timmons (West Islip, N.Y.) until midway through the second half.

At the 62:54 mark, Nicholas Constantino (Cincinnatus, N.Y.) played the ball across the mouth of the goal to the foot of Joe Sheehan (Liverpool, N.Y.) for the equalizing one touch score on the left post.

Alvarez had a chance to net the game winner with 20 seconds remaining in regulation, but Timmons stopped a point blank header to force the overtime period.

Morrisville State poured on the offense in the second extra frame, but all shots sailed high over the cross bar. Oswego attempted to clear the ball out of their defensive zone, but Jesse Astudillo (Wheeling, Ill.) beat the defender to the ball and played it up field, to the foot of Sheehan who crossed it over to Alvarez.

Alvarez had one extra step on his defender and buried the shot inside the right post for the win with seconds remaining on the clock.

Timmons made a total eight stops on the day in the loss for Oswego.

Larkin recorded seven saves in the win for the Mustangs who return to the field Thursday, hosting SUNY ESF at 7 p.m. on Drake Field.
