Box Score
Edward Humphreys scored twice in the second half to lift the men's soccer team to a 2-1 CUNYAC home victory over the Lightning of Lehman College on Wednesday evening at the Met Oval in Maspeth, New York.
The Lightning scored early in the 16th minute and kept the Bearcats shutout throughout the first half with a strong defensive presence on the back line.
The Bearcats were finally able to break through to tie the match in the 67th minute.Oren Kozlowski started the play at midfield, avoided several defenders, and fired a perfectly placed long pass to Kevin Romero on the right flank. Romero beat his defender and sent a low cross into the box that met a charging Humphries to knock in the tying goal.
The Bearcats kept pressing for the go ahead goal in the final minutes and were rewarded for their effort with less than four minutes remaining. Kozlowski shot the ball from about 24 yards out that forced the goalkeeper to make a hard save, but the rebound came back out to a charging and unmarked Humphries in the penalty area to knock in the goal for the eventual 2-1 final score.
Romero was the most active player this evening with seven shots, while Kozlowski finished with five.
Goalkeeper Helder Correia earned the victory in front of the net with four saves. The biggest came during the second half as he defended a one-on-one scoring opportunity to keep the match tied at one.
The Bearcats dominated possession and won the shooting battle 29-10 in forcing most of the action on the Lightning defensive side of the field.
The Bearcats will enjoy a break in their schedule and return to action on Saturday, October 19, with a CUNYAC road match at CCNY. Kick off at Randall's Island Field #91 is scheduled for 9:30 am.
