Fighting Scots Blank Salem State 3-0
Salem, MA— Salem, Mass. –The Fighting Scots of Gordon College, ranked No.22 in the NSCAA/Continental Tire NCAA Division III Men's Soccer National Poll, shutout the Salem State Vikings 3-0 at Alumni Field on Tuesday evening, to record their third straight victory. Gordon, which has blanked its last three opponents, improves to 13-1 on the year, while Salem State slips to 1-11.
The Fighting Scots started the scoring early when Kellen Kasiguran (Oakwood Village, OH) put an unassisted shot past the goaltender just 2:55 into the game. Despite controlling play for most of the half, Gordon could not extend its lead until Caleb Cole (Coatesville, PA) added an unassisted goal at the 42:46 mark to make it a 2-0 Fighting Scots going into halftime.
Gordon College continued to pressure Salem State in the second half, but the Vikings stayed in the game, and had a chance to cut into the lead, but a penalty kick by Salem State's Saimir Zepaj (Peabody, MA), and the subsequent rebound was stopped by keeper Josh Spoonhour (Greencastle, PA). Colten Corey (Highlands Ranch, CO) added an insurance goal in the 69th minute on an assist from Dalton Weaner (Northbridge, MA) to make the final 3-0.
The Vikings' Nondas Kargakis (Heraklion, Greece) stopped three shots while Spoonhour (Greencastle, PA) made six saves. Aaron Horton (Douglas, MA) finished the game in net for Gordon in the combined shutout.
Salem State's next game is at Worcester State at 12:00pm on Saturday. The Fighting Scots play again Saturday against Wentworth on their home field at 3:30pm.
