Price Scores Twice in Emory’s UAA Win over #13 Brandeis
Emory University scored three unanswered goals, including a pair
from junior co-captain Dylan Price, as the Eagles
held onto their place atop the University Athletic Association
(UAA) standings with a 3-1 upset win over 12th-ranked
Brandeis University at the Woodruff Physical Education Center on
Sunday afternoon.
The win extended the Eagles' undefeated streak to six games,
during which Emory has gone 5-0-1. Emory improved to 10-3-1
overall for the year, including a 2-0-1 mark in their three games
against opponents ranked in the top-25 nationally, each of which
has been over the team's last four games.
The victory also allowed Emory to maintain its lead in the UAA, as
the squad improved to 3-0-1 in conferences matches with just three
UAA games remaining on the schedule. The Eagles' 10 points
earned in UAA action place the squad one point ahead of both
Carnegie Mellon, which picked up a win over NYU earlier today, and
Rochester, which defeated Washington (Mo.) 2-1 in overtime on
Sunday.
Brandeis dropped to 11-4-0 on the season and to 1-3-0 in UAA play
with the loss.
The Eagles fell behind just 21 seconds into the match, as the
Judges capitalized off an early throw in to notch the first goal of
the contest. A throw from about 10 yard away from the end
line was able to spring Michael Soboff on a one-one one with the
keeper. Soboff would drive towards the goal before passing
over to Evan Jastremski, who tapped the ball in for his third goal
of the year. Soboff picked up his eighth assist of the
campaign on the play.
Emory evened the match in the 19th minute, taking
advantage of a throw in of its own. Junior Jeffrey
Cochran launched a long throw in front of the goal that
found the head of Price, who was able to finish for the goal, his
ninth of the season. Cochran picked up his team-leading
seventh assist of the campaign on the play.
Just over eight minutes later, Jason Andrejchak
would take advantage of a long run to give the Eagles a 2-1
lead. In the 27th minute of play, he took
possession of the ball in the middle third of the field, and cut
past a pair of Brandeis defenders to create the scoring
opportunity. The freshman finished the play by beating the
keeper to the near post with a low, hard shot for his fourth goal
of the year.
Emory's 2-1 lead would hold through the rest of the first half,
with the Eagles outshooting the Judges 7-5 during the first 45
minutes, including a 5-2 advantage in shots on goal.
Price would extend Emory's lead further with his second goal of
the contest in the 53rd minute. The play was setup
by senior Andrew Jones, who drove into the 18-yard
box, and was able to keep possession after he was fouled, with the
referee allowing play to continue. Jones sent a shot on goal
that was saved by the Brandeis keeper, but the rebound was
deflected out to Price, who deposited a rocked into the upper far
corner of the goal for his team-leading 10th goal of the
campaign.
Price now has 29 career goals, and tied with a pair of former
Eagles – Merck Smith (1978-81) and Patrick McFarland
(2005-08) – for the 14th-most in school
history. The forward also leads all Eagles this season with
24 points.
The 3-1 score would last the rest of the way, as Emory sophomore
goalkeeper Abe Hannigan made a career-high six saves in the contest
to improve to 10-3-1 on the season. Brandeis outshot Emory
14-13 in the game, and both teams finished even with seven shots on
goal apiece.
Emory will be back in action on Wednesday, October
23rd, as the Eagles take a break from UAA competition
and will travel to Covenant College for a 7:00 PM.
