Trinity Men's Soccer Edged BY Wesleyan
Hartford, Conn. – The visiting Wesleyan University Cardinals broke a scoreless tie with 4:30 remaining in the game to edge the Trinity College Bantams, 1-0, in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) men's soccer action this afternoon. Trinity, ranked No. 7 in New England, moves to 7-3-2 overall and 3-3-2 in the NESCAC, and Wesleyan moves to 6-5-1 overall and 5-3 in the league. Trinity, after the starting the year with seven straight wins, is 1-2-2 in their last five games.
The teams played a scoreless first half, but not without several close calls for the Cardinals. Wesleyan hit Trinity's post on three different occasions, and another shot came within an inch of the goal, as Trinity managed to stay even heading into the midway break. Trinity's fortune ran out in the second half when first-year Dylan Hoy (Westport, Conn.) scored a goal that deflected off a Trinity defender, to give the Cardinals all they would need to pull out the victory.
As the clock ticked down, first-year John El-Hachem (Vernon, Conn.) ripped a shot from the right side of the field with ten seconds remaining, but a Wesleyan sophomore defender Ben Toulotte (Boston, Mass.) made an athletic play to keep Trinity out of the net.
Wesleyan junior goalkeeper Emmett McConnell (Merion Station, Pa.) needed three saves in the game to earn the shutout, while Trinity first-year keeper Domenic Quade (Norwood, Mass.) matched McConnell's three saves. It was physical game on both sides, as the teams combined for five yellow cards.
Wesleyan has now topped Trinity in their last three meetings, after the Cardinals picked up a pair of 2-1 wins last year, once in the regular season finale, and again in the following game in the opening round of the NESCAC Championship Tournament.
