Williamson Named to Capital One Academic All-District Team
Oglethorpe senior men's soccer player Nick Williamson was named to the Capital One Academic All-District team for NCAA Division III District 5 today, marking the first time a member of the Oglethorpe men's soccer program has received the prestigious honor. Williamson is now automatically nominated for Division III Capital One Academic All-America honors.
The award was voted on by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) who work in Division III District 5, which encompasses Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Missouri, Mississippi, North Carolina, Puerto Rico, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia.
Williamson, a Pensacola, Fla., native and a forward on the men's soccer squad, has been named to two conference academic honor rolls, once in 2011 with the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) and again in 2012 with the Southern Athletic Association (SAA). He is an accounting major and currently holds a 3.58 cumulative GPA.
On the field, he is currently tied for seventh in the SAA in goals scored (7) and eighth in points (15). He also sits 16th on the conference leaderboard in shot percentage with a .241 mark. His two game-winning goals this season tie him for sixth in the league. The first came in a 3-1 non-conference win over Covenant Sept. 25 and the second in a 3-0 SAA victory at Hendrix Oct. 13.
To be eligible for nomination to the Capital One Academic All-District teams, a student must have at least a 3.3 GPA and be a starter or important reserve that has competed in at least 50 percent of his team's games. He also must have completed at least a calendar year at his institution and have reached sophomore athletic eligibility.
Williamson and the rest of the Petrel men's soccer squad next play Saturday at 3 p.m. on Oglethorpe's Salamone Field, when they take on SAA rival Berry with the regular-season conference title on the line. A win would assure them at least a share of the championship and at least a No. 2 seed in next weekend's SAA Tournament in Conway, Ark.
