Marquez Selected to the CoSIDA Academic All-America® Division III Men’s Soccer Team
The College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced on Friday morning that University of Redlands men's soccer senior defender Richie Marquez (Pomona, CA) landed on the CoSIDA Academic All-America Third-Team. For Marquez, it is his first-ever CoSIDA Academic All-America honor, following two years as an Academic All-District member.
To be eligible for Academic All-America® consideration, a student athlete must be a key member of his/her respective athletic team, maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.30, and have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her institution. Sports Information Directors from collegiate institutions all around the country then nominate and vote for the most deserving student-athletes.
While finishing out a fantastic career with the Bulldogs, Marquez collected his first Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Player of the Year plaudit for his phenomenal play throughout the 2013 season. That award follows receiving First-Team All-SCIAC laurels in each of his first three campaigns at the U of R. Serving as the lynchpin of the Maroon and Gray defense all season long, this two-time team captain helped Redlands post six shutouts during the 2013 campaign to go along with an impressive goals-against-average of just 0.85. Moreover, Marquez is the only men's soccer player from the SCIAC to receive CoSIDA All-America recognition for the 2013 season.
A six-time Dean's list member and likely four-time Redlands Scholar-Athlete, he boasts an impressive 3.76 cumulative GPA as a Communicative Disorders major. In addition, he has twice been named the Omicron Delta Kappa (ODK) Male Athlete of the Month at the U of R.
