U of R Men’s Soccer Collects Four NSCAA All-Region Honorees

More news about: Redlands men's team

The National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) announced on Monday morning that four University of Redlands men's soccer players garnered Division III All-West Region accolades due to their fantastic accomplishments throughout the 2013 season.  Senior defender Richie Marquez (Pomona, CA) headlined the foursome with a First-Team selection, while junior midfielder Matej Kustura (Las Vegas, NV), junior forwardCharles Izydorek (Redlands, CA), and senior forward Evan Keny-Guyer(Portland, OR) each landed on the Third Team.

Redlands' four selections were the most of any Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) school, with only one other conference program garnering a single award.

Collecting his fourth-consecutive NSCAA All-West Region honor, the First-Team laurel is Marquez's third during his time at the U of R.  While serving as the team's captain for the second-straight campaign, Marquez was vital to Redlands' defensive successes throughout season, helping the Bulldogs post a goals-against-average of 0.85.  In addition, as the cornerstone of the defense, he assisted the Bulldogs in registering six shutouts while stopping the opponents' top attacking threats en route to the U of R notching a 12-4 overall mark this year.

While garnering his inaugural All-Region award, Kustura proved to be the lynchpin of the Bulldog attack throughout the entire season.  He tied for the team lead with six goals, while dishing out a team-best eight assists.  In an early-season triumph over the University of La Verne, he dished out two assists in a 2-1 victory.  Continuing to show his playmaking ability, Kustura went on to register another pair of assists in a 3-1 win over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges later in the season.  In addition, he found the back of the net on a number of key occasions, including three game-winners.

Collecting his second-consecutive All-Region laurel, Izydorek served as one of the squad's primary attackers throughout the 2013 campaign.  While playing in just 14 games due to injury, he still tied for the team lead with six goals, while also racking up four assists to rank second on the squad.  Izydorek came up clutch for the Bulldogs on a number of occasions, scoring game-winners against Occidental College and La Verne during the first week of the season, while registering other important goals throughout the course of the campaign.

Keny-Guyer lands on the All-Region team for the first time in his career after experiencing a career-best season with the U of R.  While finding the back of the net five times and tallying three assists, he showed why he was one of the best attacking threats on not only Redlands, but in the west region.  One of his biggest goals of the year came in overtime against Pomona-Pitzer Colleges in a 1-0 victory, while he also added a top-shelf rip against CMS in the important two-goal triumph.
