Marquez Garners NSCAA Scholar All-America and Scholar All-Region Accolades
It was announced on Wednesday morning by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) that University of Redlands men's soccer senior defender Richie Marquez (Pomona, CA) landed on the College Division NSCAA Scholar All-America Third Team, while also garnering Scholar All-West Region First-Team laurels.
To be eligible for a Scholar All-America Team, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.30 cumulative GPA throughout his/her career, start more than 50% of all games, be a significant contributor to the team, and be nominated by an institution that is a current NSCAA member.
These honors come on the heels of Marquez's NSCAA First-Team All-West Region accolade, College Sports Information Directors of America(CoSIDA) Academic All-America plaudit, and his Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Player of the year award. As a Communicative Disorders major, he has totaled a 3.76 cumulative GPA.
While captaining the 2013 Bulldog men's soccer team to a 12-4 overall record, Marquez served as the big-time defensive stopper for the U of R defense all season long, shutting down opponents' top attackers on a nightly basis. His defensive efforts helped to ensure six shutouts throughout the campaign to go along with a fantastic goals-against-average of 0.85. With his inaugural Scholar All-America selection, he is the only player from the SCIAC to earn the heralded distinction.
Furthermore, he is the only SCIAC men's soccer player to land on the Men's Scholar All-West Region First Team for the 2013 campaign, with only one other conference player garnering scholar All-West Region laurels as an Honorable-Mention team member.
