Kevin Parma of Western New England Tabbed CCC's only NSCAA Scholar All-American
KANSAS CITY, Kan.--Western New England's Kevin Parma (Peconic, N.Y./Southold High School) is the lone Commonwealth Coast Conference representative on the 2013 National Soccer Coaches Association of America Men 's Scholar All-America College Division team, which was announced by the NSCAA on Wednesday. Parma placed on the third team.
Parma, who last month repeated on the Capital One Academic All-America® NCAA Division III First Team by the College Sports Information Directors of America, is one of only 33 student-athletes chosen for the NSCAA's prestigious award that comprises men's soccer programs from NCAA Division II-III, NJCAA Division I-III, NAIA and NCCAA Division I-II. Both awards recognize select collegiate student-athletes for their dual accomplishments on the field and in the classroom.
The senior co-captain helped the Golden Bears finish the season with a 16-5-3 record, a CCC championship and an appearance in the NCAA Division III Championship Second Round. He was the driving force behind a WNE defense that allowed an average of just 0.88 goals per game and posted a CCC-best 12 shutouts. Parma's previous postseason accolades include: NSCAA/Continental Tire All-New England South Region First Team, Eastern College Athletic Conference New England Division III Men's Soccer First Team All-Star & ECAC regional Defensive Player of the Year, CCC Defensive Player of the Year, New England Intercollegiate Soccer League All-Star Game invitee, and NSCAA College Division Men's Scholar All-East Region.
To be nominated, in part, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.30 cumulative grade-point average (on a 4.0 scale) throughout his career; start more than 50 percent of all games and be a significant contributor to the team; be nominated by an institution that is a current NSCAA College Services member; and be a junior or above in academic standing at the current institution.
Those meeting the above criteria will be considered by the committee for one of the Scholar All-America teams. The committee reviews both the academic and athletic accomplishments of the nominees. The NSCAA Scholar Athletes of the Year for men and women are selected by the national selection committee from all levels of the Scholar All-America teams.
A double major in accounting and finance with a 3.89 overall GPA, Parma scored two goals to wrap up his four-year career that included eight goals and 20 points while starting in 80 of 91 games played. He is a three-time all-conference performer--his last two seasons on the first unit.
