Cortland Boots Rutgers-Newark, 2-1, in NCAA 2nd Round

BABSON PARK, MASS – Junior forward Ole Toepfer (Haltern am See, Germany/Hiberniaschule Herne) scored two first-half goals and the Cortland men's soccer team held off Rutgers-Newark in the second half to earn a 2-1 victory Sunday afternoon at Babson College in the second round of the NCAA Div. III Tournament. The Red Dragons improved to 16-4-1 overall, matching the school record for wins set in 2003, and advanced to face nationally top-ranked and defending national champion Messiah College in the third round next Saturday at a time and location to be determined.

Sophomore Daniel Friend (Deer Park) recorded two assists for Cortland, and junior Ole Daumann (Hamburg, Germany/Sachsenwaldschule Reinbek) contributed one assist. Senior goalie Tim Beauvais (Hilton) registered five saves to become Cortland's career leader with 334, surpassing the mark of 331 set by Terry Moss from 1994-97.

Chigozie Atubi netted the Scarlet Raiders' goal in the second half on an unassisted effort. Goalie Matt Broomall made four saves for Rutgers-Newark (16-6).

Toepfer gave the Red Dragons a 1-0 lead in the 32nd minute with his ninth goal of the season. Friend and Daumann teamed up to deliver a pass to Toepfer on the right side of the box where he delivered a header inside the right post. Friend then assisted on Toepfer's team-high 10th goal of the season in the 41st minute, sending a forward ball that Toepfer flicked past a charging Broomall on the right side of the box.

The Scarlet Raiders cut the lead to 2-1 in the 60th minute. Atubi gathered a loose ball in the box and sent a shot inside the left post. Rutgers-Newark continued to pressure Cortland as the Red Dragons repeatedly cleared the ball out of their defensive third looking for a quick counter. The Scarlet Raiders had one last chance to score the equalizer, but Beauvais made a diving save at the right post on Hubert Dul's 22-yard shot in the 87th minute. Just over a minute and a half later, Cortland nearly picked up its third goal, but freshman Drew DeJohn's (Spencerport) open shot in the 88th minute sailed high.
