Hood Outlasts Frostburg St. as Demich Sets School Record

FREDERICK, Md. - Hood College junior Drew Demich (Jefferson, Md. / Brunswick) set the Blazers' single season goal scoring record and tied the record for consecutive matches with a marker in a 2-1 win over Frostburg State.

The match pitted one of the highest scoring teams in Division III against one of its stingiest defenses. Hood entered the match tied for sixth in Division III in scoring offense, while the Bobcats were second in the nation at 0.17 goals against.

Demich gave the Blazers a 1-0 lead early in the match. Juliano Pillari (Toms River, N.J. / Toms River North) sent a corner into the center of the box. Matt Viti (Thurmont, Md. / Catoctin) got a head on the ball and Demich finished for a 1-0 lead in the sixth minute.

The goal was the junior's 13th of the year, breaking Tom Noonan's record from 2006. Demich, who is the Division III leader in goals scored, tied the Hood record of six by Guillame Farges in 2005. Demich's 28 points tied Farges for the second best season in Blazer history.

Hood's lead did not last long, however. Almost exactly two minutes later, Guy Nabo approached a ball played ahead, shed a Hood defender and went to the far post for his fifth goal of the year.

Defender Robert Ellerson (Cream Ridge, N.J. / Allentown) scored the game-winner in the 22nd minute. Pillari sent the ball his way and the freshman finished for his first career goal.

In the second half, Alec van Bronkhorst (Gaithersburg, Md. / Watkins Mill) nearly extended the Blazers' lead, but Mitchell Muise made a team save. Frostburg State had a chance for the tie in 87th minute, but the Bobcats were called for offsides.

Joe Centeno (Mount Airy, Md. / Linganore) made three saves for Hood. Hassan Mostafa stopped six in the loss.

The win was the Blazers' fifth in a row, one short of the school record set in 2005. Hood's seven wins midway through the year are one off the Blazer record of eight set in 2014, 2006 and 2005.

Hood travels to King's on Saturday, September 26 for a 1 p.m. match.
