Joe Machado Named New SUNY Cobleskill Head Men's Soccer Coach
The SUNY Cobleskill Department of Sport & Exercise announced today that Joe Machado has been named the Fighting Tigers Head Men's Soccer Coach for the 2015 season. Machado comes to Cobleskill from 2014 NCAA Division III Men's "Final Four" participant Ohio Wesleyan University where he served as the program's First Assistant Coach after joining the Battling Bishops in 2013. During his time with Ohio Wesleyan; the program compiled a two-year mark of 36-4-7 capturing a pair of North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Regular Season Championships while making a pair of NCAA Division III Championship Tournament appearances highlighted by their 2014 "Final Four" run.
Machado was a three-year standout member and two-time captain of the men's soccer program at the College of Mount Saint Vincent (CMSV) in Riverdale, N.Y. where he graduated with his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Biology and Business in 2009. During his career with the Dolphins he earned All-Skyline Conference Scholar-Athlete honors and was the President of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) for both CMSV and the Skyline Conference.
He began his college coaching career upon his graduation in 2009 at St. John's University in Queens, N.Y. as a graduate assistant coach where he earned his Master's Degree in Professional Studies in Sport Management and Coaching Leadership in 2010. While working in the areas of operations and scouting he helped the Red Storm to the 2011 Big East Tournament Championship and a NCAA Division I Tournament appearance.
In 2012 he joined the coaching staff of Yeshiva University in New York, N.Y. as an assistant coach with both the men's and women's soccer programs serving as the goalkeeping coach while working in all coaching and organizational aspects of each program.
In addition to working with Saint John's and Yeshiva University from 2009 thru 2013 Machado also served as the Head Varsity Girls Soccer Coach at Yonkers High School, in Yonkers, N.Y. where in 2010 he was named the Conference 2 League A Coach-of-the-Year while directing the Bulldogs program. He also currently holds a National Soccer Coaches of America Association (NSCAA) National Diploma in Goalkeeping Levels 1-thru-3 and has passed his United States Soccer Federation (USSF) Grade 8 Referee's Course.
"Joe Machado is a hard working young man who in a relatively short period of time has amassed an impressive body of work," said SUNY Cobleskill Director of Sport & Exercise Kevin McCarthy. "I think in Joe, we have found a high energy individual who can jump start our rebuilding process and start moving our men's soccer program in the right direction again."
After accepting his first head college coaching job the new Fighting Tiger head coach spoke enthusiastically about the position and the task at hand.
"I am very excited to be here because I've been working hard for a long time to get an opportunity like this," said Coach Machado. "We now need to get the young men in our program working hard together collectively in order to get us moving in the right direction."
Machado becomes the seventh coach in program history succeeding Chris Curran who passed away unexpectedly in February of 2015 after compiling a 16-67-2 overall mark including an 8-30-1 in North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) action in five seasons with the Fighting Tigers. In addition to his coaching duties; he will also serve as an instructor in the Cobleskill Department of Sport & Exercise.
