MIT Announces Change in Men’s Soccer Coaching Staff
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – MIT Director of Athletics, Julie Soriero, has announced that there will be a change in the coaching staff for the Engineers men's soccer program. Ken Bovell, an assistant coach for MIT for the past two seasons, has been named the head coach of the team. He will replace Aidan Byrne, who is resigning to accept a position with the New York City Football Club of Major League Soccer (MLS) that will start in January.
Bovell has over 25 years of proven success as a coach at many levels. He was born in, and grew up playing soccer in Trinidad. Upon coming to the United States he played soccer at Boston College and was a semi-professional player in the L.A.S.A. League.
Bovell has been an ODP coach for many years and has worked with players at the high school, college and club levels. His teams have won state and regional championships and have contended for national titles as well. He holds a USSF "B" Coaching License.
"I look forward to working with Ken Bovell as our new head coach for men's soccer," said Barb Bolich, MIT Assistant Athletics Director and SWA. "He possesses outstanding knowledge, experience and vision that will continue to move our men's soccer program forward."
In his only year with MIT, Byrne led the Engineers to an 8-7-3 overall record and a 3-4 mark in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) that was good for a fifth-place finish and a spot in the quarterfinals of the NEWMAC Tournament. Byrne's team produced three All-NEWMAC players, including the Rookie of the Year, freshman Joshua Wilson (West Chester, Pa.).
"Coach Byrne will be missed," remarked Bolich. "We fully understand and support his decision to pursue a professional position with the New York City Football Club."
