Clancey's First Career Goal Lifts RIC Past Western Connecticut, 2-1

Providence, R.I.--Freshman defender Jack Clancey (Narragansett, RI)tallied the first goal of his collegiate career and it proved to be the game-winner as the Rhode Island College men's soccer team posted an important Little East Conference, 2-1, victory against Western Connecticut at Alumni Field on Saturday afternoon. |

Western Connecticut (3-7, 2-2 LEC) got on the board first when RIC (8-3-1, 2-1-1 LEC) senior goalkeeper Chris Moura (Rumford, RI) came out of the net and punched away a WCSU throw-in. The ball caromed straight to the foot of sophomore midfielder Darion Richeme (Danbury, CT) who blasted in a shot from 15 yards out at the 11:44 mark to put the Colonials up 1-0. |

RIC answered in the 17th minute when Western Connecticut was whistled for a foul. On the ensuing free kick, sophomore midfielder Dennis Vazquez (Providence, RI) sent a ball into the box that was headed in by junior defenseman Elimane Saye (Providence, RI) from five yards out to knot the game at 1-1. |

The Anchormen controlled the action the rest of the half and took the lead in the 39th minute. Junior midfielder Ty Catunto (New Bedford, MA) started the play with a throw-in from the near sideline. Junior forward Komla Dogbey (Providence, RI) controlled the ball and sent a pass to Clancey who headed in a shot off the precision passing. |

RIC had several scoring opportunities to add an insurance goal late in the first half, but couldn't capitalize on four point-blank shots in the final 30 seconds and took the one goal lead heading into halftime. RIC held a 12-6 advantage in shots for the stanza. |

RIC continued to carry the play offensively in the second half, outshooting Western Connecticut by an 11-4 margin in the frame and a 23-10 advantage for the game en route to the victory. |

|
Moura made six saves in the victory for RIC, while freshman Luca DiCarlo (Waterbury, CT) notched eight stops in the loss for the Colonials. |

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will travel to Gordon for a non-conference contest on Tuesday, Oct. 11 (3:30 p.m.). |
