Staten Island Knocks ofdf Bearcats (1-0) in CUNYAC Quarterfinal
The Baruch College Bearcats suffered a 1-0 CUNYAC Tournament quarterfinal elimination loss to the College of Staten Island on Wednesday night at Randall's Island Field #10.
The postseason match was a defensive affair until the visiting Dolphins broke through in the 78th minute with a goal by Joe Bolella from 25 yards out. The shot hit the cross bar and dropped inside for the only goal.
The Bearcats attempted five shots compared to 15 by the Dolphins.
The Dolphins twice had one-on-one scoring opportunities against Bearcat goalkeeper Victor Torres, but he come off his line both times to make two heroic saves to keep the match scoreless until the late goal by Bolella.
Alexey Arefev had a team-high two shots for the Bearcats while Adrian Cosovic led the Dolphins with five.
The first eight of the nine shots in the quarterfinal were attempted by the Dolphins.
"I was a great match this evening by both teams, but Staten island pulled out the win," said Head Coach Ranford Champagnie. "I am very proud of how much our team played hard right up until the last second."
The Dolphins advance to take on top-seed Lehman College on Saturday at 12 p.m. in the Bronx.
