Martinez's Pair Lifts Johns Hopkins Over Frostburg State

• The Short Story: Sophomore Pablo Martinez scored a pair of goals in a span of just 22 seconds to lead the 13th-ranked Johns Hopkins men's soccer team to a 2-0 win over visiting Frostburg State Wednesday night.
How it Happened
• Johns Hopkins was pressuring the Frostburg State defense all night and nearly got on the board in the 59th minute when freshman Brian Lenzer blasted a shot from 20 yards out, but it just grazed the outside of the right post.
• In the 75th minute, sophomore Xander LeFevre made a spectacular diving save to keep the Bobcats off the board. Blake Gaetz got a head on a Trevor Namie corner, and Brett Basham redirected it towards the lower right corner, but LeFevre knocked it away.
• The Blue Jays finally got on the board in the 87th minute off the foot of Martinez. He took a pass from classmate Alejandro Maclean, dribbled past several Bobcat defenders to the endline and somehow snuck the ball past goalie Joel Assal for the score.
• Just 22 seconds later, Martinez had his second of the night to give the Blue Jays a little cushion. He cut back towards the middle of the field, splitting a pair of defenders and curved a left-footed shot inside the left post from 17 yards out.
What it Means
• Hopkins improves to 8-0-0 all-time against Frostburg State, including 5-0-0 at home. The Blue Jays have not allowed a goal against the Bobcats in the last five meetings.
• It is the 149th win in the career of head coach Craig Appleby, now in his 17th season of coaching.
Inside the Box Score
• Martinez's first goal of the night was also the first of his career. He is the sixth different Blue Jay to score so far this season.
• Martinez's two goals are also the fastest consecutive goals in JHU history, besting David Drake's record of 27 seconds set against Ursinus on October 12, 2007.
• LeFevre finished with two saves to earn his second straight shutout. Assal made three saves in the loss for the Bobcats.
• Hopkins outshot Frostburg State, 20-6, and had a 12-2 advantage in corners.
