Capital edges Marietta 2-1

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Capital University defeated Marietta College by the score of 2-1 Wednesday (Oct. 10) evening in Ohio Athletic Conference men's soccer action. The loss drops Marietta to 6-7 overall and 0-4 in the OAC. Capital improves to 10-2 overall and 4-0 in the OAC.

What started out as a high scoring match with three goals scored in the first 20 minutes turned into a defensive grind for both teams.

Capital struck first in the tenth minute. Chewy Gordon, who leads the OAC with 16 goals, found the back of the net with an assist from Daniel Bundschuh. The Crusaders made it 2-0 with an unassisted goal from Nick Scharfenberger in the 18th minute.

Marietta cut the Capital lead in half less than three minutes later. Tom Sloan buried a long-range shot from 25 yards out for his fifth goal of the season.

The Crusaders turned up the defensive intensity in the second half and limited Marietta to just three shots, none on goal, after halftime.

For the match, Capital took 16 shots to nine for the Pioneers. The Crusaders held a 10-3 advantage in shots on goal and a 4-2 edge in corner kicks.

Logan Wiedman recorded two saves in goal for Capital, while Dakota Penquite had eight saves for the Pioneers.

Marietta plays at Wilmington College on Saturday (Oct. 13). Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
