Washington U. Women's Soccer Falls to No. 21 Chicago, 1-0
St. Louis, Mo., November 6, 2010 – The Washington University in St. Louis women's soccer team suffered a 1-0 loss to No. 21 ranked University of Chicago on Saturday afternoon at Francis Field in the final regular season contest for both teams.
Prior to the contest, Washington U. honored its lone senior, Julie Tembunkiart, who played her final home game of her career on Saturday. During her four years on the Danforth Campus, the Bears posted a 60-19-7 (.738) overall record.
Chicago (12-4-2, 6-1 UAA) got on the scoreboard first in the 17th minute, as Sarah Loh's shot from 25 yards out snuck over the head off sophomore goalkeeper Clara Jaques. The goal for Loh was her team-leading seventh of the season. Washington U. outshot Chicago, 8-6, in the first half, and had two scoring opportunities late in the half.
Freshman Jessica Johnson beat a Chicago defender and nearly tied it up in the 41st minute, but Chicago goalkeeper Emma Gormley got a hand on it. Junior Emma Brown had the best scoring opportunity for the Bears with 12 seconds left, as she drilled a shot from 25 yards out off the crossbar.
The Bears outshot Chicago, 11-2, in the second half, and had two scoring opportunities late in the game. A shot by Tembunkiart went off the crossbar, and then follow-up shot by freshman Lauren Steimle was saved by a defender for a team save to keep it a one-goal game.
Jaques made four saves in the loss for the Bears, while Gormley had six saves. The Bears outshot Chicago, 19-8, and had a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks.
The NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Selection Show will be streamed live on www.ncaa.com on Monday, Nov. 8, at 8 a.m. (CT). The Bears have made nine NCAA appearances in school history, including four-straight.
Bear Notebook: Washington University and the University of Chicago met for the 23rd time in school history, with the Maroon holding a 11-10-2 advantage … The Bears are 33-7-2 at home in the last four seasons.
