Wharton, Bobcats Upend Blazers, 3-0
FREDERICK, Md.--Forward Amanda Wharton collected all three Frostburg State University goals off rebounds in front of the net as the Bobcats (3-0, 1-0 CAC) downed the Hood College women's soccer team (2-2, 0-1 CAC) Thursday afternoon in the Capital Athletic Conference opener for both schools at Thomas Athletic Field.
Wharton was in the right place at the right time on three different occasions for the Bobcats, the newest members of the CAC. She converted two shots that ricocheted off the hands of Blazer goalkeeper Rachelle Buhrman and a third that deflected off a Hood defender.
Buhrman put forth a valiant effort as she was tested from start to finish in her 61:08 in the net, making a career-high 18 stops, including several one-handed diving saves.
Hood's lone shot on goal came off the foot of midfielder Aimee Smith in the 40th minute, but it was corralled by the reigning CAC defensive player of the week, keeper Michelle Buckmaster.
The Bobcats held a 32-5 advantage in the shot category on the afternoon. Hood's Cara Jordan, this week's CAC offensive player of the week, was limited to just two shots by the FSU defense.
The Blazers will now hit the road for six straight contests, beginning with a trip to regional rival McDaniel College Saturday. The Blazers and Green Terror meet at 1 p.m.
