McDaniel Topples Blazer Women in OT, 2-1
WESTMINSTER, Md.--Forward Liz Beall scored the golden goal just 2:56 into the first overtime period to propel the McDaniel College Green Terror (1-1-1) to a 2-1 nonconference win over the Hood College women's soccer team (2-3) Saturday afternoon.
After Beall set up teammate Sam Wilson for the first tally of the afternoon in the 18th minute, the Blazers booted in the equalizer when junior Jessica Devine scored her team-high third goal of the season in the 38th minute. Devine's score came on a header off a Cara Jordan corner kick. McDaniel's Wilson had a chance at scoring the go-ahead goal just before the halftime whistle but Hood's starting keeper junior Kirsten Cacciola was there for the stop as the two teams went into intermission tied at 1-1.
Senior Rachelle Buhrman relieved Cacciola to start the second half and made a valiant effort in the net, denying five more Green Terror attempts, including three in the final 10 minutes. But the Blazer front line was unable to convert in regulation either, forcing Hood's first overtime test of the season. In the sudden victory session, Beall was the hero for the hosts, lifting McDaniel to its first win of the fall and sending the Blazers to their third straight defeat.
Hood looks to get back on the winning track Tuesday at nonconference foe Washington College at 4 p.m. The Blazers and Shorewomen played to a 2-2 double-overtime draw last season at Thomas Athletic Field.
