Nichols Falls in Home Opener, 2-0, to Framingham State

DUDLEY, Mass. (Sept. 3) – Framingham State senior midfielder Kerry Kiley (Mansfield, Mass.) and first-year forward Isabela DeSouza (Framingham, Mass.) each found the back of the net as the Rams defeated host Nichols, 2-0, in a non-conference women's soccer matchup on Saturday. The contest was the season opener for both squads.

Framingham State (1-0) scored early as Kiley broke away and slipped the ball past the Bison keeper in the 14th minute of play. Nichols (0-1) midfielder Chelsea Shaughnessy (Halifax, Mass.) provided the hosts with the best opportunity with 37:53 remaining in the half. Her 20-yard shot was narrowly stopped by Rams sophomore netminder Ashley Hibbard (Marlboro, Mass). Framingham State led the way with 16 shots to Nichols nine and held a 5-0 advantage on corner kicks heading into the break.

After the intermission, each side aimed for the net four times including a spectacular header by Shaughnessy following a free kick with 34:35 to go in the contest. Hibbard was right there to make the stop for the visitors. DeSouza planted the Rams fifth shot in the net from the 12-yard penalty kick line for the 2-0 edge in the 76th minute. Nichols led the second half in shots 11-9 and both teams took a trio of corner kicks.

Hibbard (1-0) earned her first collegiate decision and turned away eight shots for Framingham State. As a team, the Rams took 25 shots with 14 being on goal while also attempting eight corner kicks.

Junior goalkeeper Maureen Lynch (Holbrook, Mass.) (0-1) recorded 12 saves on 14 shots for the hosts. The Bison attempted 17 shots – eight on goal – and took three corner kicks.

Nichols ventures to Emmanuel in Boston, Mass. on Tuesday for a 7:00 p.m. contest. Framingham State heads to Curry for a 4:30 p.m. showdown on Wednesday.
