Spartan Women’s Soccer Blanks Westminster, 2-0, in Season-Opener
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – Junior midfielder Kendra Simmons (Medina, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) tallied a goal and an assist as the Case Western Reserve University women's soccer team opened the 2011 campaign with a 2-0 victory versus Westminster College on Thursday, September 1 at WC Soccer Field.
The win was CWRU's first to open a season since 2008.
Sophomore Rachel Bourque (Newton, N.H./Central Catholic) put the Spartans on top early with a goal assisted by Simmons at 5:53. Simmons then added the insurance with an unassisted score at 25:15.
In goal, senior captain Anna Kennedy (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township) tallied three saves en route to her 11th career shutout. Jenn Cantella recorded 11 saves for Westminster.
For the game, the Spartans outshot the Titans 22-4 and won the corner kick battle, 7-1.
The Spartans are back in action on Wednesday, Sept. 7 with their home-opener versus Denison University at 7:30 p.m. at Case Field in Cleveland.
