HAWKS DEFENSE HOLDS OF EXPRESS
HAMBURG, N.Y. – Kayla Norman (Brockport, N.Y./Brockport) scored just 16-seconds into the second half, breaking a scoreless tie, and sending the Hilbert College Hawks (1-2) to a 1-0 non-conference victory over the Wells College Express (2-2) in women's soccer action Wednesday afternoon in Hamburg, N.Y. Rachel Mattraw (Chaumont, N.Y./Lyme Central) paced the Express in net finishing with five saves. Mary Zinni (Batavia, N.Y./Batavia) earned the victory in goal for the Hawks with four saves.
Both teams played a scoreless first half. The Hawks held a slight advantage in shots (7-6) but it would be the Express who challenged in the offensive end, holding a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks.
The Hawks struck quick in the second half as Robbi Bailey (Saranac, N.Y./Saranac) fed Norman for the first goal of the game just 16-seconds into play. The Hawks defense held strong from there, allowing just four Express shots the rest of the half en route to the victory.
Overall, the Hawks held a slight advantage in shots on goal (6-4), while the Express held the slim advantage in corner kick (4-3).
The Express return to action this coming Saturday against NEAC rival Penn. St. Abington at 2 p.m. in Abington, Pa.
