Privateers Blanked By Coast Guard, 6-0, Friday Afternoon At Reinhart Field

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Sept. 9, 2011) – The Maritime women's soccer team was shut out by the visiting Bears if the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, 6-0, Friday afternoon at Reinhart Field. The loss drops the Privateers to 1-3-1 overall on the season, while Coast Guard improves to 2-1.

The Bears had five different goal scorers on the night, led by freshman   Elyse Bobczynski, who tallied the first two goals of the game in the ninth and 16th minutes. The first goal was assisted by classmate Holly Moore, while the second came from senior Shannah Shelton. Coast Guard scored two more times in the opening half, an unassisted goal by Shelton off a free kick in the 24th minutes and a goal with 2.7 seconds left on the clock by freshman Brittany Zirulinick on a breakaway, assisted by junior Kelsey Freeman. The Privateers were outshot 11-1 in the first half and trailed 4-0 after.

Coast Guard tallied two more goals in the second stanza, as Moore picked up her second assist, feeding sophomore Rachel Deschene in the 56th minutes and the last goal came in the 83rd minute off the foot of freshman Michaela Baca.

In net for Maritime, junior Courtney Marietta (Grantville, Pa./Lower Dauphin) made eight saves on the night in the losing effort, while Bears keeper, senior Mary Mills made one save.

The Privateers return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 14, when they travel to take on John Jay College of Criminal Justice of the CUNY Athletic Conference. Game time is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Metropolitan Oval in Maspeth, Queens, N.Y.
