Central Defeats Eureka, 11-1

More news about: Eureka women's team

EUREKA, Ill. – Central attempted the most shots by a Eureka College women's soccer opponent in nearly two years and found the back of the net 11 times, dealing the Red Devils an 11-1 defeat, Sunday afternoon at Traister Field.  Eureka junior defender Maddie Zois (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central H.S.) scored her second goal in as many days in the 90th minute.

The visitors put heavy pressure on Eureka (0-4-0) junior goalkeeper Sami Williamson (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central H.S.) and the Red Devils' defense early, firing three shots and earning a corner kick before Liz Clancy pushed her shot past Williamson in the sixth minute for a 1-0 Central lead.  The Dutch maintained the pressure throughout the remainder of the half and added tallies from Alayna Bailey (18:48) and Brittany Hinton (23:56) before Central took a 4-0 lead into halftime after Sierra Kuhns scored the final goal of the half in the 34th minute.

Central (4-1-0) put the game further out of reach with a pair of quick strikes in the 51st minute.  Kristi Klatt scored her first goal of the match on a feed from Hannah Davy for a 5-0 lead before Bailey scored her second goal of the afternoon just 19 seconds later to push the visitors to a 6-0 advantage.  Central was able to score a total of seven goals in the final 45 minutes of the match.  First-year Central head coach Mike Kobylinski used 20 players in the victory, all of which played at least 30 minutes.

Zois spoiled Central's shutout bid when her free kick from the right flank beat Central reserve goalkeeper Abby Norman to the far post in the final minute of the game. (89:21)  Zois, who hadn't scored a goal in the first 36 matches of her collegiate career, has scored in each of Eureka's previous two matches.

Williamson was able to stop nine shots on target from Central until she left the match with an arm injury in the 27th minute.  She was relieved by junior Lindsey Coffey (Pekin, Ill./Pekin H.S.), who made 11 saves in nearly 64 minutes of action in net.  Their combined 20 saves were tied for the fifth-most in a single match in program history and the most since Eureka stopped 20 shots from Fontbonne on Sept. 19, 2010.

The Dutch fired a total of 55 shots, the most by a Eureka opponent since Illinois Wesleyan took 60 shots in a win at Traister Field on Sept. 15, 2009.  Klatt, Bailey, Nancy Huddleston and Hinton each scored twice in the win.

Eureka will return to action Saturday when it hosts Lake Forest at Traister Field.  Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.

NOTES: Eureka freshman forward Jenna Brooks (Peoria, Ill./Limestone H.S.) made her collegiate debut when she entered the match in the seventh minute.  She played 71 minutes and took Eureka's first shot of the match in the 60th minute ... The Red Devils are now 0-4-0 all-time against current members of the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference ... Coffey extended her all-time Eureka goalkeeping records in saves (204) and minutes played (1,907).
