Royals Suffer 1-0 Defeat in Overtime to Swarthmore
Senior midfielder Emily Coleman (New Haven, Conn./Choate Rosemary Hall) scored in the 97th minute as Swarthmore handed The University of Scranton women's soccer team its first loss of the season, 1-0, in overtime on Sunday afternoon at Fitzpatrick Field.
Coleman picked up a loose ball on the right side after a scramble and buried a shot from 16 yards out past Royals sophomore goalie Kelsy McAnelly (West Chester, Pa./Villa Maria Academy). The goal gave Swarthmore (3-2) its first victory against Scranton (3-1) in eight tries.
The Royals' defense was strong up until the winning goal. Freshman midfielder Andrea Ricketti (Hamilton, N.J./Pennington School) and junior defender Noelle Malone (Rockville Centre, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) helped the Royals hold Swarthmore to just four shots while Scranton had 19 of its own. The Royals also enjoyed a 6-1 advantage in penalty kicks.
The Royals put pressure on the Swarthmore defense from the beginning, but junior goalie Marie Mutryn (Rexford, N.Y./Niskayuna) made seven saves in the shutout. She made five of those saves in the first 25 minutes of the contest when Scranton had plenty of opportunities, but could not break through. Mutryn also made a save on Royals sophomore midfielder Rebecca Hextall (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Marymount) in the overtime period during a three-minute stretch when Scranton applied nearly constant pressure on the Swarthmore defense.
Sophomore forward Samantha Russo (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown) had a team-high nine shots for Scranton.
The Royals are back in action Wednesday, Sept. 14, when they host Kean University at 7 p.m. at Fitzpatrick Field.
